Our final course project is quickly approaching, and you are tasked
with conducting no less than five field site observations where you
collect extensive notes and build rapport with members of the community
you are investigating.
You must list two communities
you are interested in researching for your project. The community you
choose should NOT be a community you are already a part of. College is a
place where you are supposed to get diverse experiences, and this
project calls you to step outside and away from communities you are
familiar with. In past terms I've had students explore congregations of
churches, tattoo parlors, restaurants, Paul Mitchell's school of Hair
Design and Cosmetology, and many more.
You must pick at
least two communities because one may not pan out. Consider how
difficult it will be to access a particular community and also consider
your time constraints (you have about a month to gather all of your
data).
List at least two communities you are interested
in investigating. Give some background on the communities and explain
why you are interested in researching them. You will eventually pick one of these communities to pursue for your final paper. For now, I want you to list two just in case one doesn't pan out.
My first community that I would like to pursue is the Flagler Hall floor three pod community. I live on the second floor currently and I always see them hanging out. I think this could be an excellent way to get to know the students in my building and it is extremely easy to access.
ReplyDeleteMy second community is going to be SGA. I have always thought about getting involved in SGA and I think this can be an awesome way to get my foot in the door. I would love to see how they operate daily and what responsibilities the hold too.

My first community that I would like to study is the Volleyball team here at UCF. I am currently on the soccer team, and am interested to know the methods and different training styles they use. Also, since they are girls I feel as if they probably interact with each other differently than us. It will be a good way to help appreciate the time that other sports put in, and gain knowledge in their sport.
The second community I would like to choose is the Women's Tennis Team. Another sport I am not particularly familiar with. At this time they are in season, since they are a spring sport. I am interested to know how that might different from fall sports such as ours. Like volleyball, I would like to gain more knowledge in their sports and feel it's a good way to interact with other fellow athletes.

ReplyDelete1. Christian congregations in the Bradenton, Florida area
Over spring I’m going to be going back home to Bradenton I will be there from February 28, 2014- March 9, 2014. This gives me enough time to visit at least five churches. If I do not finish all of my studies during this time I plan to come home the following weekend. I will be going to mid week services, which are usually on Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as the large service that takes place for most on Sunday. I chose this community because I’m a Christian and was raised under a household were both of my parents were pastors this is my in into this discourse community. My mother has a variety of connections with pastors in this area and they would be more than willing to have me come and observe their services while there taking place. I will be observing the differences in worship styles, organizational structure, and a more controversial subjects how they raise their offering (money). I expect to face some difficulties when it comes to taking common church lingo and translating it into terms that will be understandable for those who are not in this religious sector. I will cover all factions that fall under Christianity from Baptist to Pentecostal. Yes, they all have the common goal of sharing the word of God but they do differ in the way they translate this message.
2. Predominately African American or Black hair salons in the Bradenton, Florida area
I as a Black young women have continuous visits to the hair salon. I tend to have an appointment every two weeks, or twice a month. Therefore, I have in to this discourse community through my hair stylist. However, I will not only be focusing on the different techniques and methods that must be used when dealing with Black hair but also the cultural and historical background behind hair salons. Hair salons are no longer a place were women stop to get their hair done but have transformed into a safe haven for women to gossip, discuss current events, and get advice on their home lives. This can be correlated to the saloons in France were local French men discussed the earliest forms of democracy and republicanism under the ideals of Montesquieu. I find this fascinating when something that seems so small has such a large meaning and impact on society.
The first community option I will like to get to know is the surf club. The surf club meets about once a week and holds various group activities throughout the entire week. I came into UCF with the intent on joining the surf club and trying out for the surf team, but I had to get back surgery during winter break so I never met up with the club. I love to surf, it is my favorite activity, so getting involved with the surf club, learning how they speak and interact and observing how experienced surfers interact with beginner surfers will be very interesting.
ReplyDeleteThe other community I am extremely interested in is HuntonBrady Architects. HuntonBrady Architects is a reputable architecture firm in orlando. I would love to observe their vocabulary when working on projects and how they communicate with each other. I just recently changed my major to architecture, so going into an architecture firm and learning their ways of working would be extremely interesting, and beneficial to my education.
From as far as I can remember I have always been interested in doing my hair and makeup. I always thought about going to a beauty school but my parents persuaded me to go to college and get a "real" education. I decided to have Paul Mitchell's beauty school be one of the communities that I want to study. I am to curious as to how it would be to go to a school like that. One of my best friends goes to Paul Mitchell and I always hear her talk about how much she likes it. I plan on getting a lot of information for her and her classmates and also visiting the school to check it out myself. I am extremely interested to see what it would be like to be apart of a community such as Paul Mitchell's Beauty School.
ReplyDeleteThe other community that I would be interesting in find out more information about would be the UCF dance team called Knight Moves. I started dancing at the age of four and have loved to dance ever since. I quit my dance team in high school because i was so busy with my soccer team but my love for dance remained. I have always dreamed about getting back into dancing but with college i am just so busy. I think this is the perfect opportunity to get to know about Knights Moves the dance team. I know some of the girls on the team because they live on my floor in my dorm. I have easy access to ask these girls about the community they are involved in. I plan to find out as much information as possibly about this dance community.
My first discourse community is the KYX Christian fraternity. It is UCF's only Christian fraternity. I am interested in this group because I am in Sigma Phi Lambda and they are our brother fraternity but I don't really know much about them. It would be interesting to see how they are and see similarities between the two organizations.
ReplyDeleteMy second discourse community is Catholic Campus Ministry. They are the Catholic group on campus. They meet every week and have mass every Sunday at NorthView. I am interested in this group because I am Catholic but I have never joined this group. I would be interested in learning more about their meetings and how they do things. Since I am Catholic, it would be nice to see the similarities I have with this group.
The first organization that I am interested in is the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. I am a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, and we subsequently fall under their jurisdiction, but I do not know much about them I would like to find out more about what they do for the Greek community and the campus as a whole, and more specifically, how they impact my fraternity.
ReplyDeleteThe Second community I would like to investigate is the Young Republican's Club. I have a good friend who attends meetings regularly, and I am also a Republican, but I do not know much about their meetings and what they actually do. It would do me well to learn more about my political beliefs and to understand what young adults like myself are doing to help out the Grand Old Party.
The first community I am looking into would be the Lake Mary High School marching band that my little sister is a part of. Home for me is only about 30 minutes away so it would be easy for me to go and get work done. The band meets every day during school hours, as well as twice a week after school. Apparently since I've left there have been major changes, and I would like to get an insight on what is going on now.
ReplyDeleteThe second community would be the College Democrats Club. I was a part of the Young Dems club back in high school, and I think it'd be interesting to see how it differs from what I'm used to. I know they do a lot of community service, more than a 1,000 hours of service a year. They have a general meeting every week.
My first choice is to spend time with the Paint Ball Club on campus. I have really always wanted to try that. It seems like a lot of fun and something new I have not ever tried. Not sure how that will work with my schedule so my second choice is to spend some time at a tattoo parlor. I have a few tattoos, not much, but I would enjoy seeing what it is like to work at one. My older brother does tattoos. I have been trying to get him to get a licensed job and maybe if I learn more about it I can share with him.
ReplyDeleteI have many friends who are encouraging me to join the Reddit online community. I might give that a try because they tell me Reddit is a great way to learn a lot of little things. My second choice would be the fraternity that my roommate belongs to. I have never really been interested in joining a fraternity, but I attribute this mainly to the fact that I know next to nothing about what they do. This could be a chance to educate myself on the pro/cons.

ReplyDeleteMy first choice is The Gaming Knights Club on campus. I Currently just started to go to events and i don't know anything about this club except they play videogames, So i want to find out everything about it and evaluate it. i know that it is recently new club due to the joining of console knights and pc knights. The President is Alex Chiricosta. That is all i know about this club.
My Second choice is the Manly Gaming club at UCF. i was told that there is a group on campus that plays all the outdoor or small summer camp games you played when you were little like Man-hunt, Mafia, infection, etc. I think it would be fun to take a trip down memory lane with the games i played with my friends that weren't videogames.
I am interested in learning more about an elementary school nearby, Bonneville Elementary. I want to teach second grade after I graduate and would love to learn more about the community. I know that teachers interact with each other in certain ways and have many specific things they do to benefit younger students. I am interested in finding out how some of the programs work in the school and what I will need to know to do in the future.
ReplyDeleteMy second option would be Age of Ink Tattoo Parlor. I feel that a tattoo parlor might be a popular choice, but I am very interested in this small community. Age of Ink is really near by and would be very easy to access. I have been there a few times for piercings and tattoos, and plan on going again for my next tattoo. Tattoo artists have their own way of expressing themselves, and they are very talented. I would love to learn more about them and how they began doing what they do and what got them interested in the first place.

ReplyDeleteOne community that I am interested in investigating is the UCF soccer club. I think this would be a good community to go to since I've played soccer for basically my entire life, but since coming to college its been dropping in my things to do.This would not only rekindle my love for the game, but would put me among some (hopefully) like minded people.
Another community I would investigate would be the UCF Gaming Knights. I've been to an event just to check things out before, and it seemed like a lot of fun. I like to play video games too, so it would be interesting to see an organized group of people like me.
The first community I would like to research is the UCF rowing team. I play soccer on the men's soccer team here and it would be very interesting to find out how other teams operate. They live on my floor and their sport seem to be very interesting. This assignment will help me appreciate other athletic programs here more.
ReplyDeleteThe second community I might look into will be the UCF golf team. They are one of the best golf teams in the country. They produce some of the best golfers in the whole country. I would be interested in researching more about them and their sport so I can learn more about them. Golf is a cool sport to get into.
The first community that I would like to research is the UCF intramural football teams. Since I was about 5 years old, I have played football with friends and family. These games were mostly for fun, and there was little strategy involved or utilized. I would like to achieve an understanding of how teams internally interact, and how they incorporate serious strategies to win football games. This assignment will help me understand and appreciate the strategies that different teams utilize both on the offensive end and defensive end.
ReplyDeleteThe second community that I would like to research would be the UCF intramural basketball 3 on 3 teams. The reason I would like to research this community is because I have a love for basketball. I can talk basketball all day long and not get bored. I like watching different ways that different players are able to perform at a high level. This assignment will help me understand the strategies that each player and team takes at different times during the game, how different offense run through one player or if it is more of a team game, and how the defenses of different teams interact and communicate with one another.
The first community that I am interested in investigating is the collegiate branch of Circle K International at UCF. CKI is an organization that combines community service and leadership training to provide opportunities to meet and form lifelong friendships with other college students. CKI holds meetings every Wednesday where members are informed about community service opportunities and social gatherings that take place throughout the week. I have already attended a few meetings and I have come to find that the members are very welcoming and friendly.
ReplyDeleteThe second community that I would be interested in investigating is Equal at UCF. The main purpose of this club is to eliminate homophobia. They also strive for equality no matter a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. I have several friends who are gay and my best friend is the president of Equal which would make it easier for me to observe and investigate this discourse community.
The first community I am interested in observing is the intermural UCF volleyball team. I am not too sure of when they play or practice but I will find that information out. The reason why I chose this as one of my choices is because I used to play volleyball in high school and I would like to see how they play here. I also want to see if it's something I'm still interested in joining.
ReplyDeleteThe second community I'm interested in is this small diner in Sanford. It is a small family business and they are open 7 days a week for breakfast and lunch. I like fast-paced environments and I think it would be interesting to watch how family members communicate and work together in such a stressful environment and how it affects their personal relationships.
The first community I have chosen is Interactor Simulated Systems and they are a human behavior simulation and training community/company. They have come into the film department a couple of times at UCF because they deal with story and how they do simulations of story with interactor actors and spec actors. Seeing that I am in film it would be a fitting community to research and to see what they are all about.
ReplyDeleteThe second community is the Central Florida Future. They are UCF's news paper and I thought it would be interesting to see how they work together and collect all of the stories. I kind see a newspaper as a community that reports about other communities partly.
