The contest is to write an essay answering two questions about Dr. C. Moorer's book, "From Failure to Promise: An Uncommon Path to Professoriate". His book is autobiographical about his struggles with failure and his return to success. I think this book is timely for me as a freshman student/athlete. Reading this book and writing this essay will be an assignment I will enjoy.
The two questions I need to address in the essay are (abbreviated - detail on the website):
    1) How has the book positively impacted my pursuit of success and promise?
    2) What is my commitment to improving the lives of global citizens once I've reached my destined promise?
I like to read about people's successes, especially when they have to work hard to achieve. I have had to work hard, too, and I enjoy the inspiration. There is a spiritual element to his book, also. In his review, he talks about his spiritual walk and how God helped him. I think this will be important and make the essay more meaningful to me.

    Dates: January 2, 2014 – February 14, 2014 at midnight PST.
We are looking for an article about a place that inspires you to spend your time with no regrets. In Arnold Bennett’s book, How to Live on 24 Hours a Day, he writes about how time is the ideal democracy. “No one can take [time] from you. It is unstealable. And no one receives either more or less than you receive.” Every morning we have a new day, as he says, “The supply of time is truly a daily miracle.” Where and how do you wish to spend your time?
THEME: Inspiration: A place that inspires you to spend your time wisely with no regrets.

This essay contest is about writing about a place that inspires you to spend your time wisely. I chose this essay because there are so many places in the world to chose from but only one place that I know of that inspires me to do so when spending my time wisely. This place is not only inspiring but it also has a personal connection to me, which I will display in my essay.

Your story must start with the sentence above. Do not add to the sentence. You have the option to put it in quotes (for dialogue) and to change the punctuation at the end for proper grammar.

    Example:
"There was no reason for optimism!" screamed John. "The dialogue or story can continue..."

But do not add to the sentence or change it in any other way.

One entry per person. Minimum length 700 words. Maximum Length 7,000 words. Recommended length 2,000 - 3,500 words. If you are the current title holder for this contest you are not eligible.

This contest is a "this sentence starts the story" contest. It is exactly as it sounds, they give you a sentence and you must start out your story with that sentence. I want to do this contest because my junior year I was in a creative writing class that I loved and this was my all time favorite assignment. My teacher loved my story and I've wanted to do another one ever since.

On August 28, 1963, civil rights activists led the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom to draw attention to the importance of equality for all races, genders, religions and nationalities. The highlight of this march was Martin Luther King, Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech where he shared the dreams he envisioned for a better America.

Essays should address the following topic: Describe a time when you or someone you know took a bold stand for or against an issue and the outcome of that action.

Since, it is Black History Month I felt it would be appropriate to analyze the life of a historically black leader and their impact upon society. I have decided to evaluate the life of Rosa Parks an African American woman who took a stance and did not become weary no matter the social standards that were in place during the time. I find that inspiring and remarkable not due to the fact that I am black but because, I am a young women. To see a women stand up for an issue despite the social stigmas of women and Blacks in general at the time is highly admirable. I look forward to reviewing her life even further through deeper research. People often tell the story of Rosa Parks as a black women who refused to give her seat to a white man but, she is much more than that and I am intrigued to gather more knowledge about her story.

This essay contest requires you to write any type of fictional story. You can be as creative as you want with this contest. There are no specific rules besides that it has to be a fictional short story between 500 and 2500 words. All type of genres are accepted in this contest. This contest stood out to me because I love creative writing. I do not enjoy writing when I have to follow a bunch of rules, although this contest is very laid back. Specifically I enjoy writing romantic stories because I am a hopeless romantic. I feel that I will really be able to put a lot of effort into this contest because it is something that I am interested it.

The winner takes away a $100 cash prize. Second place will win twenty-five member dollars. Third place ten member dollars.

After looking through numerous writing sites for an essay contest to enter, I finally found this horror story writing contest to enter. Even though I hate to watch horror movies, I always liked to make them when I was involved with digital video production in high school. The story, filming and editing ideas were easy and enjoying to come up with. I thought I would be able to use my script writing skills to write a horror story for this contest.

I chose this competition because I think it would be a great way to show how greek life can benefit the individual and the campus as a whole. I also think it is a great opportunity to try to earn a scholarship. Many people have the wrong idea about fraternities and I think I can have a impact on how people view us. Being in a fraternity has changed my life and made me a better person and I think this is a good opportunity to share that.

    NEW: Short Memoir/Personal Essay Contest

We are now accepting submissions for our first ever short memoir and personal essay contest.

What we are looking for: first-person creative nonfiction that tells a good story or inhabits an idea from a very personal perspective. Whether you present your story as a narrative (you, the writer, looking back on a significant moment in your life), or in a more associative essay form (you, the writer, parsing some idea/problem/contemporary issue through the lens of personal experience), is completely up to you.

We chose not to define the contest as one or the other because the lines between personal essay and memoir tend to be so blurry. We seek great writing from a unique perspective, writing that makes us step back and look at something from a surprising angle, writing that makes us feel and think.

Please submit short memoirs or personal essays of up to 5,000 words.

    Prizes:

The winner will receive $200 and publication in ebook format.
The runner-up winner will receive $50 and publication on our website.
The second place winner will receive $25 and publication on our website.
    Entry fee: $10

    Deadline: April 1, 2014

I chose this essay contest because it allows me to delve deeply and express about a topic I know best; my life. I love to think, feel, reflect and express on experiences I have been through and I love to give interesting angles and perspectives on things. I write best when I am most personally attached and interested in the topic, so I figured this is about as personal a writing topic can get. I have never had the opportunity to have a writing assignment in which I can so freely express myself so I am excited to be in this contest.

  10. In the past two years, Regions has awarded $245,000 in scholarship money to 57 deserving high school and college students through the Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Essay Contest. In honor of Black History Month, Regions is proud to announce the scholarship Contest for a third time. Regions will award sixteen $2,500 scholarships to college freshmen, sophomores and/or juniors from, or currently attending college in, states with Regions branches. To enter, write a 500-word essay about an African-American whose contributions inspired you and influenced your college career.

    http://promo.regions.com/RidingForward/default.htm?CID=24029&V_TID=1353370&ProspectID=EA446CC37A4A45D79A4B4AA1484DFF57

When choosing my essay contest, I took several important points into consideration. Because this assignment allows us to choose our contest, my first thought was to choose an essay which I could gain potential scholarship money from. What better motivation to write than money, right? Once I made this decision, I went straight to UCF’s Scholarships Listing page and began my search for a scholarship essay which best catches my interest. After browsing the long list of scholarships, I came across the Regions Riding Forward Scholarship and knew I could produce a well written essay for the topic. Not only do I have the potential to earn $2,500, but I also thoroughly enjoy the prompt at hand. In honor of Black History Month, Regions plans to award sixteen $2,500 scholarships to the writers who produce well written essays about an African-American whose contributions inspired and influenced the writers’ college careers. After reading this prompt, Fredrick Douglass instantly came to mind. Reading Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass in high school changed me as a reader, writer, and person in general. Frederick Douglass taught me that I should never take literacy for granted, as not everyone has access to novels and education in the way I do. The novel inspired me to read and write to my full potential, which brought me to the college student I am today. All of these factors contribute to why I chose this essay contest.

I chose to enter this particular essay contest because out of all the contests I encountered, none were anything I was really interested in. Traveling and going to see all the different cultures around the world is something I've dreamed of my whole life so writing about a specific place that I wouldn't regret spending a minute at will make my writing much more personal and easier to communicate with my readers. It will also give me a chance to discover a certain part of the world that I want to visit and learn more about it, rather than just wanting to go there because of its beauty and the spectacular tourist reviews.

    Avon Scholarship Essay Contest
    “Why Film Matters”

In 500-750 words, please discuss a film released in 2012 or 2013 that you believe has relevance. It may be a feature film or documentary, American or foreign. Please tell us why you think this particular film matters and how film, in general, impacts our society. Please do not re-tell the story. The content of your response is more important than the length. You do not need to be a film studies major to enter the contest. The Scholarship Award check will be made out to the college or university you will be attending this Fall.

    $4,500 in College Scholarship Prizes
    • $2,000 First Place
    • $1,500 Second Place
    • $1,000 Third Place

    Deadline: Wednesday, May 15, 2013

The way I would approach this essay is to find a phenomenal movie that came out in 2012 or 2013 that I could use for an analysis. Then I would start asking myself questions like “why is the film good,” “why does it have an impact on me,” etc. Finally to answer the last part of the prompt, I would ask myself why did I become a film student in the first place, and what aspired me to become so passionate about film? The reason why I connect with this essay is because I’ve been asked this question before and I can’t help but wonder why such an art form has an impact on anyone.

This essay contest interests me because it gives me room to write freely about myself and my life experiences. It will allow for deep thought, and personal insight into my life as it has been so far. I find that writing about my life experiences is an enjoyable thing to do. This essay calls for one of two parts that are either of an interesting life experience of mine or of a relatable experience that showed a problem in my life. I feel that recalling my life could be a pleasant thing to write about.

Write a personal essay of 1500 words or less that shows your interpretation of the phrase “Olympic Spirit.”

The Sochi games begin with the opening ceremony on Friday, February 7th. Not only do these games signify competition, they also unite the world for 17 days as people all over the globe cheer on their athletes and celebrate all the hard work and effort needed to compete as elite sportsmen and women.

We want to hear your thoughts on the Olympics and in particular the "Olympic Spirit," but we want you to personalize these thoughts. Make sure your personal essay truly shows what you believe is the Olympic Spirit.

Consider these questions to spur ideas as you write your personal essay...
Do you remember the first time you saw the Olympics?
Do you have a favorite Olympic moment?
What are your thoughts on terroristic threats and increased security at the Olympic games?
Are you an athlete? Do you have your own championship moment or do you have a story surrounding the agony of defeat?
Does your family watch the Olympics together?
From a historical perspective, these games were developed to showcase supreme athleticism, but also to unite the countries in a time of peace. Do you believe the games unite our world?
Do you believe that every human being has the potential for greatness? (see the opening quote by Wilma Rudolph)
Don't answer each of these questions in your essay. Rather, what we want to see is a stylistic, personal essay that shows how you define the Olympic Spirit.

We look forward to reading your story for this month's writing contest.

I chose to enter this essay contest because it allows for more free thinking than most essays. It isn't a story, but it does allow for more opinion than many other essays allow. I get to define and interpret the "Olympic Spirit" in my own words, instead of following a pre-made format on how to write the essay. This goes along with monday's lesson on ignoring traditional writing "rules," which is another reason that I chose it.

I chose this contest because I am a person who is heavily influenced by poetry. Wether it's on a piece of paper, in a song, or narrated in a movie, it is something that draws my attention. To me there is just something special about being able to tell a story in a sort of rythm, or to a beat. The way it all comes together is something that makes me remember why I am so involved and drawn to good music artists. They are able to sway the audience to a beat or even acapella with a sort of rhyme that many arent naturally blessed with,. This contest just seems like another cool way I can share a story or life experience with others, but in a more cool and relaxed way. That is why I chose this.

I chose this contest because I was looking for something that would allow me to be creative and comfortable in my writing. First, this is a creative writing contest. However, the thing I like the most about it is that it is personal which makes it comfortable. I feel more comfortable when I'm writing about something I'm familiar of. I don't like to do research and if I do I don't write as well. By writing about something personal, I'm familiar and my writing is better.

For this contest you are presented with a “what if” for your character. What if your character called on of the numbers written on the wall of a public restroom? What happens?

I chose this particular contest because I am a Film major and writing a short story seems fitting. I think the prompt encourages an interesting take on how a short story can be formatted and it opens up many paths a story can take. In previous writings I have tried to keep them interesting by leaving unanswered questions throughout it until around the end you can realize the answer. So I want to see what I can do with this prompt and see where it will end up. A character that has a “what if” in their life seems interesting. Even though every one of us probably has a “what if” moment every day and probably more than once a day, just taking one of those “what if” moments and focusing solely on it and seeing how it might affect a character’s life, such as calling a number on a wall, is something I would like to experiment with. Also I could use a prompt like this for any future film projects I would want to work on, and this could be a start for the planning of one.
